| NLA Orders End To Manual Lotto Operations Nationwide Starting October 1 |
Big changes are coming for Ghana’s lotto industry, and the deadline is closer than most operators might think. The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has issued a firm directive: manual, paper-based lotto operations must end nationwide effective Thursday, October 1, 2026.
In a public notice released Monday, September 28, the NLA made its position unambiguous, warning that any Private Lotto Operator (PLO), agent, or writer still running paper-slip systems past the deadline will be barred from operating — and could face legal consequences on top of that.
NLA Director-General Mohammed Abdul-Salam has framed the shift as part of a broader modernization push, noting that the lottery industry has moved on from pen-and-paper sales and that the Authority intends to fully align with that shift. The goal, according to the NLA, is to close the gaps that have allowed unauthorized operators to exploit the old system.
The digital rollout isn’t just a future promise — it’s already happening. The NLA recently deployed 5,000 new Point of Sale (POS) terminals as part of the transition, and the system recorded its very first instant-payout electronic lottery win on September 17, with the prize disbursed automatically through an NLA-Fidelity POS unit.
For agents and writers across the country, the message is clear: the days of manual coupons are numbered, and compliance with the new digital system is no longer optional. With the deadline just days away, many in the industry will be watching closely to see how enforcement plays out once October 1 arrives.
