It started, as these things always do, with a tweet that named nobody — and ended with two of Nigeria’s biggest music names trading blows in front of millions of eyes.

Warri-born rapper Erigga, the self-styled voice of the streets, hopped on X with what looked like a harmless shoutout: “Shoutout to all the musicians who don’t come from family money and had to grind for every single dollar they earn.” Simple. Inspirational. The kind of post that usually gets a few likes and disappears into the timeline by morning.

Except this one didn’t disappear. Because somewhere in Lagos — or wherever he was vibing that day — Davido saw it, and Davido was not about to let it slide quietly.

The Clapback Heard Across Naija Twitter

The Afrobeats superstar, son of billionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke, read between the lines and decided the post was aimed squarely at him. His response came fast and unfiltered: “No be we say make your pops no guard o. Shoutout to the ones that came from family money and still grind to the top.”

Translation: rich kids grind too, and don’t you dare act like hard work belongs only to the broke.

But Davido wasn’t done. He went further, dismissing Erigga’s original post as “useless motivation” and dropping an insult that lit the whole thread on fire. Then came the real mic drop — a threat to walk away from music entirely: “No worry o I go soon leave their music for una go make my billions… then that shit gonna be boring AF. Deep down, who like poverty?”

Bold words from a man who built an empire on melody. But that’s Davido for you — never one to bite his tongue.

Fans Pick Sides

Within hours, Naija Twitter had split clean down the middle. Team Erigga argued he was simply celebrating the self-made hustle — the kind of grind that turns a boy from Warri into a legend without a safety net. Team Davido fired back that privilege doesn’t erase effort, and that coming from money has never stopped anybody from working for their own name.

One user summed up the mood perfectly, brushing off the whole drama as an overreaction to an innocent post. Another wasn’t so forgiving, telling Erigga to stop “throwing ignorant shade” if he really had someone specific in mind. A third simply egged Davido on, hyping him to keep going.

Whether Erigga was truly subbing Davido or just vibing on a general motivational quote, one thing is certain — this is the internet, and the internet decided there was beef whether the two men confirm it or not.

The Bigger Question

Underneath the back-and-forth sits a conversation that never really goes away in Nigerian entertainment: does being born into wealth cheapen your hustle? Erigga clawed his way up from a tough background to become one of the most respected voices in Naija hip-hop. Davido was born into affluence and still built a global Afrobeats empire from the ground up. Two very different starting lines, same finish line — superstardom.

So who’s right? Maybe both. Maybe neither. One thing’s for sure — when Davido and Erigga trade words online, the whole of Naija stops scrolling to watch.
