Suspect Arrested After Midwife Assaulted at Tema Community 22 Polyclinic, NARM-GAR Demands Action

The Greater Accra Regional Chapter of the National Association of Registered Midwives – Ghana *(NARM-GAR)* has condemned the June 2, 2026 assault of a midwife at Tema Community 22 Polyclinic, as police confirm the arrest of a suspect set to face court Monday.

What Happened

A viral video showed a patient’s relative physically assaulting and manhandling a midwife on duty at Tema Community 22 Polyclinic on *Tuesday, June 2, 2026*. NARM-GAR called the video “disturbing” and condemned the act “in the strongest possible terms”.

GHS: Attack Was “Unprovoked”

The Greater Accra Regional Directorate of Ghana Health Service said the midwife was attacked while enforcing the facility’s visiting hours policy. In a June 6 statement signed by Dr. Robert Amesiya, GHS described it as an “unprovoked” assault and commended police for their swift response.

GHS confirmed the Ghana Police Service restored order at the facility and arrested the alleged attacker. The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned before court on Monday, June 8, 2026.

NARM-GAR + GRNMA: “Unacceptable and Criminal”

NARM-GAR said midwives work “under challenging conditions” to save lives and should not face “physical assault, intimidation, verbal abuse, and other forms of workplace violence”. They warned that rising violence creates “an atmosphere of fear and trauma that negatively affects service delivery and patient outcomes”.

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association *(GRNMA)* also condemned the attack as “uncultured, unacceptable and criminal”, stating “no nurse, midwife or healthcare worker should be subjected to intimidation, threats, harassment or physical assault”. 1973

*Calls for Urgent Security Measures*

GRNMA urged Tema Community 22 Polyclinic management to immediately:

1. Increase security personnel at critical service points

2. Implement stricter visitor management and access control

3. Establish rapid response protocols for violent incidents

4. Install/maintain surveillance systems

5. Conduct regular security risk assessments 1973

GHS reaffirmed its commitment to staff safety, saying it “will not condone any behaviour that compromises their safety, well-being, or ability to work effectively”.

Health leaders note this follows other incidents, including the August 2025 assault of a nurse at Ridge Hospital. Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh previously said “no circumstance warrants a physical attack on health workers” and promised new security measures for facilities.

NARM-GAR and GRNMA insist hospitals must remain “places of healing, compassion and safety, rather than environments where nurses and midwives fear for their lives”.
