Social media blogger and Shatta Movement supporter Abdul Gafaru Sani, popularly known as Webkid or WebkidAfrika, has been granted bail by an Accra High Court after spending over six weeks in custody.
The court set bail at GH¢100,000 on Tuesday, ending a detention period that began on May 7, 2026.
The Case Against Webkid
Webkid was arrested by the Ghana Police Service on May 7, 2026, following a complaint linked to alleged defamatory and false posts about dancehall artiste Stonebwoy and his family on X, formerly Twitter.
He is facing six criminal counts including:
1. Publication of false news under Section 76 of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775)
2. Offensive conduct likely to breach the peace under Section 207 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29)
Prosecutors allege that around November 11, 2024, Webkid used his X account to share content described as false and misleading, which they claim endangered the safety of Stonebwoy and his family.
Denial of Bail and Fresh Charges
Webkid was denied bail twice before the latest ruling. His lawyer, Moses Kojo Akorful, told Asempa FM that prosecutors withdrew the original charge sheet and filed a fresh one with two additional counts, increasing the total to six.
“On the tenth of May, we went to court… he was rather remanded for two weeks,” Akorful said. He added that the new charge sheet left his defence “rendered moot” because the original document was withdrawn.
The case was adjourned to June 18, 2026, after the court failed to sit, leaving Shatta Movement supporters disappointed outside the Accra High Court.
Stonebwoy Named as Complainant
Webkid’s lawyer confirmed in court documents that Livingstone Etse Satekla, known as Stonebwoy, is listed as the complainant. This contradicts earlier statements from Stonebwoy’s PR representative Vida Adutwumwaa, who said the musician did not direct the arrest.
Court filings also allege that Stonebwoy’s former social media manager, Casey Kobia, contracted Webkid and other bloggers to post derogatory content about the musician and his family. b6a6
Shatta Wale’s Reaction
Following Webkid’s arrest, Shatta Wale issued a warning on X on May 8, 2026: “If dem no release Webkid, we go enter street erh? Shatta Movement disciples, wait for my signal…”
Current Status
With bail now granted, Webkid is expected to face trial while out of custody. His case continues to draw attention to issues of cyberbullying, online speech, and due process in Ghana.
Legal commentator Showboy has advised Webkid’s family to seek an out-of-court settlement with Stonebwoy to avoid prolonged legal trouble.
The Webkid case highlights the legal risks of online posts targeting public figures in Ghana. As the trial proceeds, all eyes remain on the Accra High Court for the next hearing.
