‘Mission Impossible’ Becomes ‘Mission Possible’: Black Stars Ignite 2026 World Cup Dream

The road to North America runs through Cardiff. And for Ghana’s Black Stars, it started with a rallying cry.

With just 24 days to their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, head coach Carlos Queiroz has drawn first blood — naming a 26-man squad, opening camp at Dragon Park, and declaring Ghana is in the USA, Canada, and Mexico _“to win.”_

The Squad: Returns, Heartbreak, and New Blood

On June 1, 2026, the Ghana Football Association unveiled the final list. It’s a mix of steel, flair, and redemption:

Goalkeepers: Joseph Anang, Benjamin Asare, Lawrence Ati-Zigi

Defenders: Jonas Adjetey, Gideon Mensah, Abdul Mumin, Baba Abdul Rahman, Alidu Seidu e247

Midfielders: Thomas Partey, Elisha Owusu, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Kamal Deen Sulemana e247

Forwards: Jordan Ayew, Iñaki Williams, Antoine Semenyo, Ernest Nuamah, Brandon Thomas-Asante

Major Talking Points:

1. Kudus Out: Mohammed Kudus misses out after failing to recover from a thigh injury sustained in January

2. Baba Rahman Returns: The 31-year-old left-back is back after a 3-year absence, sparking heated fan debate

3. Salisu Blow: Mohammed Salisu ruled out with ACL injury

4. 5 Keepers Controversy: Fans slammed the “oversized” goalkeeper roster

5. Paintsil, Ashimeru Absent: No Joseph Paintsil or Majeed Ashimeru, fueling GFA criticism.

Cardiff Camp: No More Friendlies, All Eyes on Panama

The Black Stars opened camp in Cardiff on May 25, training at Dragon Park with 13 players initially. The rest joined by Tuesday.

Wales Friendly: Ghana drew 1-1 with Wales on June 2. That’s it. The GFA confirmed no further friendlies before Panama after plans with Jamaica and Honduras collapsed.

_“At this point, it is a big no,”_ said GFA Comms Director Henry Asante Twum.

The Queiroz Effect: History, Discipline, and Fire

The 40-year coaching veteran isn’t here to participate. He’s here to make history. In camp, he quizzed players on Ghana’s World Cup history — 2010 quarterfinals, 1963 AFCON win — then delivered the message:

_“We are here together to make history for Ghana… When you sleep today, think about that”.

Assistant Roger De Sa has rejoined Queiroz for this World Cup mission. GFA President Kurt Okraku calls Queiroz _“a man of his words… if there’s somebody who has seen it all, he fits that bill”.

Group L: The Gauntlet

Ghana’s path is brutal:

1. June 17 vs Panama – Toronto, BMO Field

2. June 23 vs England – Boston, Gillette Stadium

3. June 27 vs CroatiaPhiladelphia, Lincoln Financial Field.

Sports Minister Kofi Adams declared: _“Ghana is at the World Cup to win!”_. Appearance fee? $100,000 per player.

Other Key Updates:

- FIFA Ranking: Ghana up to 73rd globally, 14th in Africa

- Kits: No white “Ananse” home kit in group games per FIFA color rules

- Diaspora Tickets: Ghana High Commission in Canada collecting names for Panama match

- Player Motivation: Brandon Thomas-Asante says squad is “determined to write a new chapter” with support from Essien, Gyan, Paintsil .

The Verdict

This isn’t the 2010 or 2014 squad. It’s younger, hungrier, and under a coach who’s managed Real Madrid, Man United, Portugal, Iran, Egypt, and Qatar. Can Semenyo, Partey, and Iñaki unlock Panama and shock England?

As Queiroz wrote: _“Our dream is to make the difference at the end; we have to start by being different at the beginning”.

The Black Stars begin answering June 17.
