Accra Under Water Again: June 2026 Floods Expose ‘Systems Failure’ as GMet Warns of Heavier Rains

The rainy season has barely begun, but Accra is already drowning.

On June 3, 2026, hours of relentless rain from 6:30pm turned streets into rivers, collapsed buildings, and triggered 7 fire outbreaks across Greater Accra. Nine people were rescued by GNFS from floodwaters at Oyarifa KB Junction and Old Ashongman. By June 9-10, viral videos showed Trassaco submerged, with residents wading through brown, debris-filled water pushing cars, while a woman in a compound wailed as waist-deep water surrounded her home.

The Damage: From Circle to Trassaco

Affected areas read like a roll call of Accra’s flood hotspots: Circle, Kaneshie, Pantang, Ashaley Botey Lakeside, Ashaiman, Sakumono, Kanewu, Adjei Kojo, Agbogba–Ashongman Road, Nanakrom Road, Trassaco. At Redrow Estates, Nanakrom, a perimeter wall collapsed and the road became impassable. Commercial signage for Okyerefo Pharmacy and Pacific Fuel Station stood partially submerged in Trassaco.

Why It Keeps Happening: NADMO’s Brutal Diagnosis

On June 6, NADMO’s Inspectorate Director Richard Amo Yartey gave Accra’s most honest flood assessment yet: _“Drainage channels are silted, mountain runoffs are rising as vegetation is cleared, and wetlands that should absorb them have all been sold.”

GMet agrees. Director-General Eric Asuman warns the city’s flood retention capacity is gone. _“Natural areas that once held water are now built up… as little as 30mm of rain can now flood parts of Accra.”_ For June, GMet projects 100-150mm for the coastal zone.

In short: This isn’t just indiscipline. It’s system failure.

The Official Response: Demolitions, Denials, and Directives.

Greater Accra Minister Linda Ocloo insists she “tackled flooding” via demolitions on waterways and Ramsar sites before June. _“I have a lot of people that hate me because of this demolition exercise,”_ she told Asaase FM on June 8.

Interior Ministry spokesperson Julius Kwame Anthony went further: _“The whole of Accra needs replanning… whole streets of buildings must go. A few must be offended for the safety of all.”_

REGSEC declared “heightened operational readiness” June 10, listing critical risk corridors: Odawna Sahara, Adabraka, Alajo Central, Berlin Bridge, Madina, Osu, Abelemkpe, Weija-Gbawe, Ga West, Ga East.

Public Anger: ‘Since 1957, Same Story’

Ghanaian dancehall star Samini vented on X June 8: _“We have been in charge of town and country planning since independence, yet the country continues to experience severe flooding with little visible improvement.”_

On social media, Trassaco flood videos set to Afrobeats sparked heated debate over waste management vs. government planning. Influencer Ameyaw Debrah posted: _“Chale the floods are getting worse by every downpour and getting closer home.”_

Forecast: More Rain Coming

June 10: Fair, 27°C.

June 11: AM thunderstorms, 55% chance 5am-6am, with 6.57 inches of rain forecast. UV index low, but humidity 90%.

GMet warns: _“We expect more flash floods if 40-50mm falls within an hour.”_

The Ghana Institution of Engineers says Accra needs a “radical shift” from reactive desilting to re-engineering the entire drainage system — catchment, channels, wetlands, city. Nature gave Accra the Odaw, Densu, Sakumo, Korle and Kpeshie lagoons. _“We have spent four decades dismantling that system,”_ engineers warn.

Safety Tips from GNFS & NADMO:

1. Avoid flooded roads — 6 inches of water can sweep you off your feet

2. Report buildings blocking waterways to NADMO

3. Keep GNFS hotlines handy during heavy rains

4. Move valuables to higher ground if you live in Kaneshie, Circle, Alajo, Odawna zones

Accra’s flooding isn’t a mystery. It’s silted drains, lost wetlands, and permits issued for waterways. Until the system is rebuilt — hills to sea — every June will bring the same headlines.

As NADMO’s Yartey said: The cure must be a system, not another round of demolitions photographed for the evening news.
