| Thomas Partey: Canada Visa Blow, UK Trial Delay & What’s Next for Ghana’s Midfield General |
Thomas Partey’s 2026 FIFA World Cup journey has hit an early snag. The Ghana vice-captain was forced to miss the Black Stars’ Group L opener against Panama on June 17 after Canadian authorities denied his visa application.
1. Why Was Partey Denied Entry to Canada?
Canadian officials cited ongoing criminal proceedings in the UK as the reason for refusal. Partey, 32, is facing 7 counts of rape and 1 count of sexual assault involving 4 women between 2020-2022. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The issue escalated when Partey answered “No” to prior charges on his visa form. A Canadian court dismissed his appeal on June 16, stating there was “no serious issue” with the refusal.
Ghana’s Foreign Ministry slammed the move as “high-handed and extremely unfair” and lodged a formal protest, arguing that “reliance on unproven charges… raises fundamental questions of fairness”. FIFA confirmed Partey could not travel from Ghana’s Boston base to Toronto for the Panama clash.
2. Can He Still Play at the World Cup?
Yes. Partey remains with Otto Addo’s squad in Boston and is eligible for Ghana’s remaining group games held in the U.S. The Black Stars face England on June 23 in Boston, then Croatia on June 27 in Philadelphia.
3. What’s Happening With His UK Case?
His trial was initially set for November 2026 but is now expected to be pushed to 2027 due to court delays. Partey remains on bail and cannot contact the alleged victims.
4. Club Future in Doubt
After leaving Arsenal in 2025, Partey joined Villarreal CF on a 1-year deal. The Spanish club has reportedly opted not to renew his contract, meaning he’ll be a free agent at the end of June 2026. He made 32 appearances in La Liga this season.
5. Fitness Concerns Ahead of Key Games
Ex-Ghana striker Augustine Arhinful recently questioned Partey’s sharpness after a 1-1 friendly vs Wales on June 3, saying he was “lucky not to have been sent off” and has “put on some weight.” With England and Croatia next, his form will be under the microscope.
Off-field issues have sidelined Partey for Ghana’s opener, but his World Cup isn’t over. His performance in the U.S. leg of Group L could decide both Ghana’s progression and his next club move. With his UK trial looming and Villarreal exit confirmed, the next 3 weeks are career-defining for the Odumase Krobo native.
