Pretrial Hearing Set for August 25, Trial Looms September

The case of Ghanaian socialite Frederick Kumi — popularly known as Abu Trica — is heading toward a decisive moment in the United States, with a pretrial conference scheduled for August 25, 2026.

Kumi, who was extradited from Ghana to the US in July after a lengthy legal battle, appeared before Judge John R. Adams of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, Eastern Division, where he entered a “not guilty” plea to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Prosecutors allege Kumi conspired with Daniel Yussif and others to run a large-scale romance scam that used artificial intelligence tools to build convincing fake online identities. These personas were reportedly used to build emotional relationships with victims — many of them elderly Americans — before soliciting money under false pretences tied to fabricated emergencies, travel costs, or investment opportunities.

If no plea agreement is reached at the August 25 pretrial conference, the case moves straight to a jury trial set for September 8, 2026. Kumi’s legal team has so far declined to accept a plea deal, according to reports from US outlet WUSA9, which has been tracking the case closely.

Kumi faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted. He continues to maintain his innocence.

This is a developing story — more updates will follow as the case progresses.
