ShattaFest UK, the Shatta Wale headlined edition of Ghana Party in the Park, has been cancelled after a crowd stampede left several fans injured at Copthall Playing Fields in London.
The event, held on Saturday, August 1, drew thousands of Ghanaian music fans from across the UK and Europe for what organisers had billed as one of the biggest Ghanaian cultural celebrations of the year. But chaos broke out at the entrance as a surge of fans pushing through bag and security checks triggered a crush.
Disturbing footage circulating online showed people falling to the ground as the crowd surged forward, with several festivalgoers suffering non-life threatening injuries. Multiple emergency vehicles, including air ambulances, were seen arriving at the scene, and witnesses reported seeing injured attendees carried away on stretchers.
UK police confirmed the venue had exceeded its approved capacity, forcing authorities to step in. Organisers Ghana Party in the Park later confirmed the disruption, telling patrons in a statement not to travel to the festival site while emergency services managed the situation.
As of now, organisers have not released a full statement explaining the cancellation or confirming plans for ticket refunds, and disappointed fans have taken to social media demanding answers. ShattaFest UK, running since 2005, is normally one of the largest Ghanaian cultural events outside Ghana, attracting more than 8,000 attendees.
